Exit of Maruti 800 and Maruti Omni from Indian Car Market

About a year and half back, I wrote about the exit of Indian first luxury car Maruti Esteem from Indian Market. Maruti decided to completely phase out this car and present new car Maruti desire in this segment. Now, Maruti is again going to repeat this history by slowly phasing out most popular small car of India Maruti 800 and its Van version Omni. Maruti will remove 800 and Omni from 11 big cities of India in early 2010 where new emission rules (Euro 4) will become applicable.

Maruti will also start decreasing production of these cars and finally completely phasing out them by early 2016 because by then new emission rules will become applicable in whole India. According to Maruti, it is not profitable to upgrade Maruti 800 and Omni to new emission standards, therefore, company has decided to slowly phase out them. Maruti 800 is also referred as people’s car because this car provided hope in the eyes of large Indian middle class to afford a car.

Maruti 800 was launched in year 1984 in India and so far Maruti has sold more than 2.5 million Maruti 800 cars. These numbers themselves tells us the story of huge success of Maruti 800 in India. Maruti 800 played major role in making Maruti Suzuki number one car manufacture of India. Earlier, lots of people and auto experts believed that Maruti will try to position Maruti 800 against Tata Nano by reducing its price; however, Maruti does not see any profit in doing so.

Tata’s Nano is likely to give competition to Maruti 800 because of its economical price; therefore, it is certain to see decrease in sales of Maruti 800 after the availability of Tata Nano in Market. With this news, it also looks that Maruti has decided to not give any competition to Tata Nano by completely exiting from this segment. On the other hand, this is good news for Tata Nano and Maruti Alto, which can see the shift of Maruti 800 customers towards them.

India as hub for small cars

We all know this fact that India is growing very fast and slowly, we are achieving new heights which were otherwise unimaginable for most of us twenty years back. Last year, China over took America as biggest car market of world. Similarly, India is also all set to become a big super power as more numbers of its people will grow. Already, India is on the right track of growth and per capita income of people is increasing very fast.

When people will earn more money; then, definitely they will spend more. Majority of Indian pollution is made of young people who are all set to rule world and it is major factor favouring India in its growth. Most of big automakers from across the world are eyeing India for manufacturing their small cars in India because cost of production of small cars is much less in India as compared to other parts of India plus India offer a very big market for small cars; therefore, no company want to miss this bus.

After big success in IT sector in last decade, time is again favouring India because of its vast population and huge opportunities are available here. As per one report, large numbers of NRI Indian will return to India in next twenty years. Review Ford Figo

Recently, I got chance to test drive small car Figo which is latest introduction in Indian car market by Ford. Ford is only known for its big cars like IKON, FIESTA and SUV Endavour in India and, these cars have already become successful in Indian market and people love to buy these cars. Ford also expects same kind of response for its small car Ford Figo in Indian market. So far response is very good for this small car from Ford and people are lining across Ford Showrooms to feel this car and get test drive.

Mostly people look satisfied with the performance of this car and Ford Figo offer a good option at this price range. Ford Figo Diesel price starts from just Rs 4.5 Lakh which comes in affordable range for a diesel car. Price of Petrol version of car starts from Rs 3.5 which is again a good price. After driving Ford Figo, I can say that Ford Figo is definitely going to create a market for itself in India because initial performance of vehicle looks very good. I drove Ford Figo through various road conditions and it performed well on all conditions.

1.2 L petrol engine looks strong enough to drive Ford Figo in any kind of road conditions. This car is good for small family of four people. Though, I found slight problem with inner seating space of car especially in back seats and less height of car from back. Overall, I will rate 7.5 Ford Figo out of 10 and hope that its engine will meet my future expectations.
